While experiencing the joys of becoming first time parents to a precious little boy, Laef, on January 10, 2022, Chelsea and Micah found themselves rushing their newborn to the ER at just 8 days old (for the second time), knowing something was wrong, and he ended up needing emergency surgery for a perforated colon, and a diagnosis of Hirshsprungs disease was made; a correctable condition, but one that requires a temporary colostomy, and 2 more surgeries in the future to fix his colon and reverse the colostomy. They spent a week in the hospital and it was days before they could even hold their son with all the lines and tubes, and that is not easy when all you want to do is hold your baby and comfort him.

Fast forward to the weeks leading up to the next scheduled surgery, which was to be on May 6; and sweet Laef got sick and after many contacts with his surgeon, he was admitted to the hospital on May 4, and treated for gastroenteritis and dehydration, and his surgery was put on hold. Laef was slowly recovering with his loving parents by his side, when on May 12, he got very sick and was rushed into emergency surgery again.

Now here is Chelsea’s heart wrenching Facebook post describing their current situation:

“An update on our precious Laef. If you haven't already seen, Laef has had two surgeries in the last three days. The first was done emergantly. He unfortunately was in worse condition than the surgeons anticipated and they had to operate twice...we received some really difficult news yesterday after the second surgery. It went okay, but Laef had some dead bowel due to a twist in his large intestine and became very sick because of it. The dead bowel was removed and he will need to be on a feeding tube for about a year. And he will be very limited in his diet for the rest of his life. We will also likely be in the hospital for the next several months due to the fragility of his current health and the time sensitivity of things if something else were to go wrong. We will be moving our life into the hospital with him for the foreseeable future. This is difficult news on many levels, please pray with us as we are up rooted from our home, our community and Micah's job as we support our precious son. We had so many plans for the rest of the year and our life that will now be put on hold until further notice. Obviously getting our baby the care he needs is our first priority and prayers for wisdom, healing, and honestly a big miracle for our kiddo would be greatly appreciated!”

Chelsea and Micah are a fun-loving, adventurous, and faith-filled young couple, and they moved to Alaska in the beginning of 2021 after their wedding so Micah could continue his career as a boat captain/fishing charter expert and guide.  They moved to Seward, but the best hospital equipped to take of Laef is in Anchorage, a 2.5 hour drive away. And that’s where they will be for the foreseeable future. Micah had to go to very part time with his job to be able to be with his wife and son, as they are basically living in the hospital. Chelsea works remotely, but has had to take an extended leave from her job as well. This strong little 4 month old and his amazing parents have been through so much, and have handled all of this with such grace, and strength, and faith. But now with the loss of income, and looming medical bills, we are hoping to help with one less burden for this brave new family, and it’s been especially hard for us, their families, as we are all spread out throughout the Midwest and east coast. The hospital is still not allowing visitors in the pediatric areas except parents, so we are unable to visit them, or be by their side in this difficult time.

We thank you in advance for any help or support, whether it be a donation, or to pray with them and for them all❤️🙏🏻

Most of you have been following the Facebook page “Laef’s Miracle” for updates by Chelsea and Micah on sweet baby Laef’s medical progress and navigating all the trials and triumphs of life in the hospital. One positive is the they are allowed visitors and family has been able to visit!

On Monday, they sat down with their doctor and  have a good plan going forward to help rehabilitate Laef’s bowel, but it will require them to stay in the hospital for a couple more months likely. We have increased our goal with this news, as we want to help make their stay in Cincinnati as stress free as possible. Thank you to everyone for your generosity and prayers!!
