Darda

Hello beloved family, friends, and believers worldwide. I am writing on behalf of the Dhimo family. The family of five reside in Korca, Albania and have been faithful servants in the local churches for thirty years. Their eldest daughter, Darda, received a devastating diagnosis just a few days after completing her freshman year of university.

After two failed attempts at giving blood due to anemia, she went in for further testing. On June 26, 2023 she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Her bone marrow produces an abundance of white blood cells and has almost completely stopped making red blood cells. The doctors at the state hospital in the capital recommended that she receive treatment out-of-country.

Darda and her mother rushed to get passports and within three days they were in Thessaloniki, Greece in a private hospital. They repeated all of the tests and confirmed her diagnoses. The doctors immediately created a treatment plan for the first phase. Darda will receive eight cycles of chemotherapy in total over the months to come. The doctors will monitor her body’s response to treatment and once she finishes seven more cycles they will evaluate whether she needs a bone marrow transplant.

Praise the Lord the Dhimo family was able to find better care! Unfortunately, this brings a tremendous financial burden that they will never be able to pay in this lifetime or the next. The first cycle alone costed $8,000. We cannot give an exact figure because many factors are unpredictable but everything is estimated to cost €150,000 (15,145,000 Albanian Lek).

Please consider helping these parents save their daughter’s life. Darda is a kind and compassionately soul and her light is always shining. Even in the wake of this diagnosis and the physical struggles she has faced thus far, she remains steadfast in her faith in Jesus Christ and is bolstered by the joy she finds in God. She encourages everyone she meets and her smile can brighten even the darkest of days.

She has chosen a verse to share with all of you. “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

God bless you all,

The Dhimo Family

Familja Dhimo.

Sadly, I write to you today to inform you that Darda has gone home to Jesus. We weep because we will miss her for all the things that made her who she was and yet we rejoice because she is with her Heavenly Father. She is now free from the burden of her sickness and the weight of the treatments. Now she is free to do one of her favorite things; praise and worship our Lord and Savior.

We say Thank You on behalf of our church community and the Dhimo family for each donation that was given and even more so for the prayers that you lifted for sweet Darda. Please join us in celebrating her life and her testimony. She was a light that reflected Jesus and she shined even brighter as she walked through the dark valley that is cancer. She was an inspiration of faith and joy in a fallen and broken world.

A message from Darda before her passing:

Loren, preach with hope and God's love

Nardi, don't forget your guitar

Worship group, praise God like never before

Please don't wear black

I want my body to be sent out from our church

"I can do all things through him who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13

Darda is getting ready for the third round of chemo. She will leave for Greece this week. Her post-chemo blood tests came back even better than last round. Praise the Lord!

Please pray for Darda as she starts her therapy. The treatment takes a toll on her body. She feels exhausted and also experiences headaches, fevers, nausea, and other symptoms.

And please continue to send her messages and check in on her. Being isolated between treatments is lonely and difficult.

Thank you for praying and giving. God bless you!

Lavdi Zotit!

Lutuni per Darden ndersa nis terapine e rradhes.

Ju lutem vazhdoni te dergoni mesazhe inkurajuese Dardes.

Zoti ju bekofte!

Last week, Darda finished her second round of chemotherapy. This brought exhaustion to her body but some great news. The marrow blasts that were at 90% before starting treatment are all gone! This has left the doctor in shock that the treatment has been so effective in correcting the bone marrow. There are still concerns with the blood that require chemotherapy to continue. For the moment, Darda is home and resting. She still takes a daily pill to fight the mutation in her blood.

Please pray for strength as she continues with her next phase of chemo after two weeks.

Please pray for patience and perseverance for Darda. It is hard for her to stay home all day and not see much of her family or any of her friends.

Hello to all who are following Darda’s story and to those that are new. Thank you for taking the time to click the link and read this update.

It has been a little over a month since Sarda received her acute lymphoblastic leukemia diagnosis. Within days she was in Thessaloniki, Greece receiving her first dose of chemotherapy. The first phase was completed the first week of July, followed by a handful of essential tests to better understand the cancer and see how Darda’s body was reacting to the chemo.

The results of these tests bolstered our spirits.

Firstly, her body responded well to the treatment and she was able to return home for a period of time to rest and be with family.

Secondly, the doctors discovered that the cancer is due to an acquired genetic mutation and not an inherited one. Because of this she will take a daily pill over the course of four months to fight the mutation.

Lastly, they looked at her bone marrow before and after chemo. Before treatment, 88% of her marrow was damaged. After just the first phase that percentage dropped to 50%. Praise the Lord for victories.

On July 31, Darda returned to Greece for the second phase of chemo. This will last four to five days. Please keep these prayers in mind. Please send this page to your friends and family. So many have been generous but we are still far from our goal.
