Hello! My name is Sky Wilcoxson, and I’m a United States Navy Veteran. I served for 5 years as a Navy Corpsman - (Surgical Technologist) and deployed to Kandahar Afghanistan in 2019 for 9 months with the Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit.
When I returned home from Afghanistan I endured some of the lowest points of my life. I had an extremely hard time adjusting back to “normal life”. I was depressed, anxious, and experiencing suicidal thoughts. I was having panic attacks and nightmares of some of the horrific experiences my team had encountered. With the standard military medicine response I was offered a handful of medications to suppress my symptoms. This approach did absolutely nothing for me and seemed to make my symptoms worse.
When I returned back to the United States I had sought out doing Microcurrent Neurofeedback to help with the symptoms I was experiencing. This absolutely changed my life. After my first session, It had felt like my mind was clear for the first time since returning home and I was able to have a full night's rest for the first time in 6 months. With continuing treatment and therapy so many of my symptoms resolved and I was able to start enjoying life again.
The issue is, Neurofeedback is extremely expensive and oftentimes it is not covered by all insurances. The Active duty and veteran community hardly has access to providers due to the enormous cost of treatments and most do not accept tricare as insurance. Also, the fear of reprisal for many who seek mental health support that are currently serving is a real threat to their careers and livelihoods.
As many as 22 veterans per day commit suicide. I was once in the situation of potentially becoming a statistic. So with this go fund me I’m excited to be launching a program that has been so important to me over the last few years. My goal is to give access to free mental health support and care and greatly reduce the struggles the members of my community face daily.
“Neurofeedback For Vets” will cover all expenses for Veterans, Active duty, reservists, and national guard members to get 100% free Neurofeedback sessions . This program will give access to those who have been let down by a system that believes they are expendable. This will also help reduce the mental health crisis that the military and veteran community are facing.
The goal of the Neurofeedback for Vets program is to connect Veterans with clinicians and provide Neurofeedback at no cost to the Veteran, or military connected individual, for as many sessions that are needed. It is with your donations, and sharing this link that I can create a support system for those who truly deserve it.
