Supporting Dan Richards

Recently, our dearest dad, Dan Richards, experienced an unexpected fall that left him with a broken knee—fractured in three places. This injury is severe and will require surgery to properly heal. He will need cleared for surgery after two previous heart attacks. Unfortunately, the road to recovery will be long and challenging if he is able to have surgery or not. He’ll need support, both financially and emotionally, as he navigates through this difficult time.

As many of you know, our dad is a hardworking, loving, and devoted father, always putting others first. He’s the kind of person who would do anything to help his family and friends. The surgery and/or rehab process are expected to be lengthy, and during this time, he will be unable to work to make extra income, which is what he would normally do even in retirement. Medical bills, physical therapy costs, and daily living expenses are all mounting, and this is where we need your help.

We’re asking for donations, no matter how big or small, to support our dad during his recovery. Your generosity will help cover:

- **Surgery and medical bills**

- **Rehabilitation and physical therapy**

- **Everyday living expenses while he’s unable to work**

We understand that times are tough for many, and any contribution—whether financial or through words of encouragement—will make a world of difference. We are so incredibly grateful for your support, your prayers, and the love you've always shown our family. Together, we can help Dan recover from this.

Thank you for being part of this journey!

With love and gratitude,

The Richards Family

I hope your dad is able to get the surgery he needs. I don’t know your family but I grew up in Corning and have lived in California for the past 40 years. My dad needed help from his neighbors in the late ‘80’s. Iowans don’t disappoint !!!!

Update #5

April 23rd, 2025

He had a X-ray and a visit with his primary doctor today.

They’re gonna send a referral to Des Moines to have the surgery done there. Theyre unsure who’s gonna be doing the surgery as many doctors get hesitant doing it with the type of medication dad is taking for his heart. From the xray it looks like one of the pieces is already healing which the doctor made it sound like that was a good thing. They did mention that since dad hasn’t been having any pain with his knee that if he isnt able to have surgery, due to his heart, it wouldn’t be a huge deal. He just wouldn’t be able to walk as well. They do still want to try and have the surgery and are wanting to do the original plan. Which is putting the two pieces that are farthest apart together so they heal properly. Doing the surgery this way will give dad better mobility. They said that dad would probably have the surgery scheduled for June since that’s what the cardiologist recommended the time frame to be, after the stints being put in his heart.

If for whatever reason they don’t do the original surgery plan. Another option would be to remove one of the pieces of the knee cap and attach muscle to the piece that they leave in. It would still limit his ability to move but it’s just another option that could be considered. That’s basically all that was mentioned today at his appointment.

Update #4

March 8th, 2025

Dad had his angiogram yesterday. The doctor said procedure went well. They had to put 2 stints in. He now has a total of 3 in his heart. They said there are a few more clots, but couldn’t really do anything about them as they’re too small and one he has was connected to an already dead part. Doctor said they shouldn’t affect his knee surgery, though.

They want dad to wait at least 30 days to even attempt to have the surgery on his knee. They said they’d really rather have him wait 6 months, but will discuss that more at his next appointment on April 2nd.

Update #3.

March 5th, 2025

A small update, as things are moving slower than I think it should, but I’m not a doctor so 🤷🏻‍♀️ Dad had an appointment a week ago Tuesday with the doctor at Methodist. Mainly just a meet and greet. The appointment was literally a 35 min..we all thought that would have been best done over the phone, instead of making a guy with a broken knee sit in the car for a hour ride to the hospital, but again I’m not a doctor. So they finally called, this past Tuesday, and set up his angiogram appointment for this Friday. It’ll be a 4ish hour appointment. So hopefully, we’ll find out some good news when all that is said and done. Please continue with good thoughts and prayers!

Update #2

February 5th, 2025

Dad had his EKG-appointment yesterday and got his results back today. The doctors are wanting to wait on his surgery as he is marked as a high risk for heart complications. So to avoid any risk of another heart attack during the surgery they’re gonna wait. They think he’s got undiagnosed Cardiovascular disease and also believe he’s got a major blockage to his heart that they want to check in on. So, to check further into this he’ll have two follow up appointments at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines over the next few weeks. The first will be to meet with the doctor to go over what the next steps will be and to set up the second appointment of an angiogram. As of now the main concern is his heart. Once they get that figured out they’ll then work on getting his knee fixed. All continued love, prayer, and support is greatly appreciated! Thank you everyone!

Update #1

January 28th, 2025

Dad had an appointment yesterday and today. Yesterday, he met with the ortho doctor and discovered he actually broke his knee in four places. They discussed the plan for surgery if he is able to have it. Today, he met with his PCP to update him on his current condition and medications.

Next week he will have a stress test and meet with his heart doctor. This will determine if he can have the surgery. We will provide an update around that time. We are so grateful for you all!
