His comments sparked significant controversy within the district and eventually led to a prolonged conflict with fellow board trustee Carin Bondar.

The situation escalated after Barry made a statement referencing provocative online videos and expressing his belief that Bondar was not a suitable candidate for the school board. Bondar responded by filing a defamation lawsuit, claiming his remarks harmed her reputation. Despite Barry’s attempts to appeal the case, the courts upheld the ruling, and Bondar was awarded $54,000 in damages.

As a senior on a fixed income, Barry does not have the financial means to pay the judgment. His inability to pay resulted in the court issuing a warrant for his arrest. On November 24, 2025, Barry voluntarily turned himself in at the BC Law Courts, where he was taken into custody, held for seven hours, and then released pending further proceedings. However, the court postponed the hearing until December 1, 2025, leaving Barry in ongoing legal uncertainty.
