I just graduated from high school this past June. As my senior year was approaching, I found myself beginning to get anxious about my future. Fortunately, my parents and godly mentors encouraged me to look for some options that would allow me to grow in my faith and seek God's guidance for what may be next in my life. Together, we found Youth with a Mission (YWAM) - an organization committed to helping youth "know God and make Him known" through Discipleship Training Schools (DTS) and outreach programs all over the world. After researching and applying to various options, YWAM Bergen has accepted me into the January - June 2018 DTS!
I started my relationship with Jesus when I was a little boy and have been a part of an amazing church family that has helped me grow in living out what it means to be a Christ follower. From the moment I've been allowed, I've been a part of an Impact TEAM or two. From serving on my teams, to being an active participant in age-appropriate worship and bible study experiences, I have discovered that my relationship with Jesus is not just something to do while I'm at church. I've learned that while there are ups and downs and times when my decisions may not line up with God's best for me, my relationship with Him isn't a compartmentalized part of my life. It has been woven into every area. I can hardly wait to see how God uses my time at Impact Society DTS to continue shaping my faith and discover how to influence others effectively.
Bergen is the second biggest city in Norway, with a population of close to 280,000. The city is historically a center for trade and cultural meetings between Norway and the rest of Europe. Bergen also has a central part in Norwegian missions history, and many have gone into missions from here. Today the city is an important university location and a place where the future is being shaped.
I will be part of a Jesus centered, network-based, international community in the city. Together, we will equip each other to live as disciples of Jesus in all areas of life; in our family, at work, in church, in missions. As a student at Impact Society DTS, I will be living in a collective with close connections to the Norwegian student population in Bergen. The DTS is set up in two phases, lecture and outreach. I don't have a lot of details regarding the outreach phase yet, but I do know we will be putting our lecture phase into practice. I will update as I learn more!
I appreciate your partnership in prayer over the next several months. I know that this will be a continuation of experiencing God's plan for my life. This opportunity also has a financial obligation that I need to meet to participate. This seems daunting to me and sometimes makes me wonder if I should even attempt getting to Bergen. But just as those doubts begin, I am reminded that my pursuit of Jesus has led me to this point. He has placed leadership skills within me, he's set a passion inside me to help others know who He is, and I am confident that He will continue the work He has started.
There's a scripture in Psalm 37 that has become very meaningful to me during this season. Verse 5 says this: "Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you." I believe one of the ways that He will help make this opportunity a reality is through the generosity of others. If you are able, I am so grateful for your willingness to be a part of the mission before me to "know God and make Him known."
