Shaliece's Health Journey

Campaign Created by: Troy Ewert

The funds from this campaign will be received by Shaliece Zollinger.

Goal : USD $25,000
Raised : USD $ 8,270

The morning of April 8, 2022 was a frightening one. Brett woke up to a loud bang and found Shaliece on the floor completely unresponsive. After a call to 911, she was taken to Regions Hospital after suffering seizer's in the back of the ambulance. When she arrived at the hospital, and after tests, she was rushed into emergency surgery due to blood clots in the left side of her brain. During this time she also suffered a mild stroke.

While operating, the doctors found one massive blood clots in the main artery trunk and a couple of small ones in a couple of the branches of the brain. The doctors were able to restore 95% of blood flow and all clots except for a small one in one of the branches, which they did not seem too concerned with.

Shaliece made it through a successful surgery and was moved to recovery/ICU, where she started to make improvements throughout the day. The direction of the doctors at this point is to figure out why this happened. They are going to start investigating her heart, checking for irregular rhythm, blockage, etc.

Update #10

Good evening everyone,

It's been a while since we last posted and there has been some stuff that has been going on, so here is the update. Shaliece had a scope done to see if there was a hole in her heart and the findings on that were negative (woohoo). She is now waiting for appointments in October to do testing on her to eliminate that there is no autoimmune disease, which is a bugger to wait that long, but that is the soonest she can get in.

She is continuing to recover well, but gets warn out easily as she is trying to do more things. She also is antsy to start driving again. Shaliece has been using the golf cart around the property and she feels really good about doing that. The next step from here is she has to go in for a cognitive test at the end of July, then if she passes that, she will have to go in for a driver's test.

Thank you again for all the prayers and support for her and the family. That is all!!

Update #9

Hello Everyone,

Sorry it has been so long since we have provided an update for those following along. Shaliece gave us a small scare the week of Memorial day when she seemed to be going downhill. Brett took her into Urgent care where she was diagnosed with fatigue and extreme dehydration. She has been pushing herself a little too hard, so after receiving some fluids, and a stern talking too, she was sent home to rest and recover (which helped).

She is getting better everyday and has also been out driving the golf cart around the yard to help with her motor skills. She really wants to be able to drive the car again, but it is not possible anytime soon. She is working towards taking a "driver's test" through the doctor's office before they will bless off on her getting back behind the wheel. So for now, it's just the golf cart around the yard and down to the neighbors house.

Most importantly, the neurologist has informed the family that the cause of all the strokes/blood clots could be a hole in her heart. She will be having a procedure done next Tuesday, where they (neurologist) will put a camera down her throat in order to take a look at the heart to see if and where the hole may be. We are asking for continued prayers for Shaliece that God will give her the peace that she needs to get her through this time. She is a bit nervous about having a camera put down her throat, so she can use all the prayers she can get.

We will make a post after the upcoming procedure, to let you all know how it went and what the outcome is.

Thank you in advance on behalf of the family

To my friends and family (directly from Shaliece),

I would just like to say thank you so very much for the kindness, prayers, and love that you all have shown me during this very difficult time. Your generosity and unconditional gifts will be forever remembered. I am writing this because I do not have the ability to reach out to each of you individually as I would like too. So if you have sent cards, flowers, provided meals, or given a cash donation; may God bless you as you have blessed me and my family.

As for my health, everyday I am getting better and better. I have ventured out to public places, refused to use my walker, and have been able to enjoy the weather. I know that each day will continue to bring improvements and I am looking forward to seeing each of you as soon as I am able.

Update #7

Good evening everyone,

It is a pleasure to be able to tell you all that Shaliece has been discharged from the hospital and is at home. We have so appreciated the prayers and donations everyone has provided and it has been a true miracle to be able to witness the healing power of God first hand. Shaliece is not out of the woods yet though, she is going to have a long journey ahead of her.

For those of you that may not know exactly what happened, here is a brief summary: She experienced an Ischemic stroke, a massive blood clot in her left artery that was blocking 75% of blood flow to the left side of the brain, and experienced multiple seizures in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. It is unknown if the clot came from another part of the body, or if it developed in the brain. The second type of stroke that she suffered is called a Hemorrhagic stroke, which causes breeding within the brain. The bleeding was minimal. Because the blood clot was on the left side of the brain, it effected the right side of her body.

Because of the blood clot, these things have been impacted:

  1. Controls to the right side of the body
  2. Speaking/talking
  3. Understanding written and spoken language
  4. Math and number skills
  5. Reasoning
  6. May have confusion about how to use objects.

The stroke has caused things such as:

  1. physical motion
  2. Speech
  3. Thinking/memory
  4. How she feels, behaves, and acts

Shaliece will be completing two to three days per week of out patient physical and occupational therapy treatment. This will help her to continue to get her functioning back and she will have around the clock care between Brett, Lori, and the rest of the family until she becomes stronger. We ask for continued prayers for strength in mind and body.

We would like to take a moment to thank the Schute family. Heather and Rick have organized a "Meal Train" in order to help the family with their regular day-to-day meals. If you are interested in participating, here is the link that the Schute's have set up:

Update #6

Hello everyone,

We wanted to give you a quick update. First thing first, after technical difficulties the donation option has been fixed and can now be utilized. Again, we are so grateful to those of you who have been asking about contributions.

OK, on to the good stuff. We have outstanding news to share with everyone. Today during therapy, Shaliece was able to walk unassisted for 10 feet, twice. She also walked up a flight of 10 stairs unassisted. It is so awesome to watch God working in her to heal her. She is blowing minds and making people she interacts with smile with the progress she is continues to do. Her communication skills continue to grow, with thoughts being able to be vocalized, though there is still a little disconnect between speech and thoughts.

Lori stated this evening that Shaliece is an inspiration to watch. Even with how exhausted she seems to be, her strength to power through and to put the work in is nothing short of who Shaliece is as a person, wife, and mother. God is working through her to get better everyday.

I am also now allowed to share that Shaliece has a target get out of the hospital date, which is April 25th (this coming Monday). Woohoo!!!

Lastly, Brett has been asked about donating through Venmo, so he set up an account last night. Here is the link for that:

Thanks again for being on this journey with us. Your thoughts and prayers are powerful and we are seeing God answer them everyday.

Update #5

Shaliece has now been moved to the rehabilitation area. She started OT, PT and speech therapy on Tuesday 4/12. Her day starts at 830am and with a few breaks ends around 3 or 330pm. They will be working on strength and every day activities like brushing her teeth.

Today (Tuesday) she lifted her right arm with no support. She can move it around a little but there is no strength and she can not use her hand. Although she is unable to walk,  she has made progress to stand for several seconds, with assistance, and then is able to pivot and get into her wheelchair. She is gaining strength and eating much better which will help her greatly.

Her speech is getting more clear and she has gained strength in her voice, she is easier to hear. She can form many sentences that make sense although still may struggle for the right words. She now remembers

the events that took place the morning of April 8th, which they believed she may not have ever had any recollection due to the trauma.

She has become more comfortable with spending time on the phone and using video to have time with her kids. She will get tired very easily and that is very common, we pray for her to have good rest so she continues to build her strength and her mind so she can make her way home again.

We want to take a moment to thank everyone for the tremendous outreach and support. At this time we have an issue with the giving option and the issue is being worked on. We have heard from many of you that you would like to give, and we are so grateful, so please check back for that opportunity.

Update #4

Today is a good day. Shaliece has been moved out of "General Care" and moved into Rehabilitation. She is able to move her right hand as well as her right foot. The left is still good, but since the stroke that she had was on the left side of the brain, it effects the right side of her body which is why I am focusing on that.

She is also going to get to see the girls tonight as Lori will be bringing them when Abeni gets done with track. Tomorrow is the first day of intense physical therapy, so prayers for her tomorrow will be greatly appreciated. She seems to be in good spirits today and is currently resting before seeing the girls.

Brett gave the update this evening. Shaliece was moved out of ICU and into her own room. Throughout the evening, the doctors saw even more improvement from her. She was able to make a curl with her right arm and move her fingers even more.

Her memory is one of the main issues, but remember it's been about 24 hours since the incident. Shaliece is having problems with her dates, she is off about 10 years. She knows she has two girls, but get them confused when looking at pictures. Doctors are very hopeful with the progress she is making.

Asking for prayers specifically for Abeni and Kalena. For good rest, peace in their hearts, and continued trust in God.

Update #2

Brett and Karen are at the hospital with Shaliece and they gave the update that she is getting feeling back in her right side. She is able to move all fingers individually on her right side and was actually able to give a thumbs-up, which is amazing. Her speech has improved, though quiet, you can now understand more of what she is saying (All thanks to God). We want to thank you all for the continued prayer for the family. They mean a lot.

Update #1

From Kalena: "Shaliece is doing much better, my mom yesterday told me that she loved me and those were the clearest words she could say at the moment that day when we were on call at Keys cafe."

Triage Nurse came in every couple of hours to do tests. She was happy with the results and Shaliece was improving every time. They are still worried about a couple of things: 1. She still has some bleeding in the brain 2. Because of the stroke, she does not have any feeling on the right side of her body. 3. Speech is still an issue, but they are hopeful that it will improve over time.

We are not sure how long she will be in the hospital, but the doctors are saying it is going to be at least a 6 month recovery as she has to re-learn most of her motor skills such as speech, walking, and movements.

  • Asking for prayer to stop the brain bleed and heal it.
  • Asking for prayer that God removes the final clot in the brain.
  • Asking for prayer for full movement to return to the right side of her body and for her speech to full return.
  • Asking for God's peace and even joy over Shaliece, Brett, Abeni (12), and Kalena (9).
