Billy Bob Faulkingham is a 6th generation lobsterman from Winter Harbor. His father started taking him on the lobster boat when he was 3 years old. He has a wife and 3 kids who are very involved in their church and community. Billy Bob enjoys taking people on his lobster boat to see what it’s like, and sometimes help out on the boat. On one of these occasions he took his son’s 14 year old best friend. They taught him to band lobsters and bait bags, and he went 3 more times that summer. Billy Bob did what any good man would do and paid him for his help. For this he was targeted by the Maine Department of Labor and fined $6,136.00. Maine has over 5,000 license holders, and has been regulated for over 150 years and this is the first time in that history that anyone has been targeted like this. That’s also because Billy Bob is the House Republican Leader in the Maine Legislature, a citizens legislature. They imposed Labor standards on him that don’t apply to his industry that is managed much like the agriculture industry. Now he is facing thousands of dollars in fines and legal fees to stand up for not just himself but the whole entire Lobster Industry that has come under scrutiny and attack.
