Rebuilding After Domestic Violence

From Survival to Purpose: Rebuilding After Domestic Violence and Turning Pain Into Healing

Hi, my name is Claire and I’m a domestic violence survivor rebuilding my life from nothing.

A year ago, I made the hardest decision of my life: I left my abusive marriage. It was a decision made for safety, for survival, and for my future—but it came at a devastating cost. I walked away with nothing. My ex-husband took all of my savings—over $25,000—leaving me to start completely over.

Right now, I am doing everything I can just to stay afloat. I have only $25 in my bank account until May 8th, and I do not have reliable transportation. Every single day is about survival and trying to figure out how to rebuild a life from absolute zero.

But even in the middle of all of this, I haven’t stopped believing in what I could become.

I have a deep passion for helping others—especially survivors of domestic violence and people struggling with eating disorders. This is not just something I care about; it is something I have lived.

From 5th grade through after high school, I battled an eating disorder that shaped my life in painful ways. But I overcame it. I fought my way through recovery, and that experience changed me. It taught me what healing actually costs—and what it can give back.

Now, I want to go back to school so I can dedicate my life to helping others heal the way I was once helped.

### My Story in My Own Words

There are parts of my healing that I can only explain through writing.

“She is not confident because she is sure of herself.

She is confident because she will tell you her greatest weakness knowing you may use it against her… and knowing it won’t do you any good, because she’s faced that weakness before, and she’s willing to face it again.”

Writing has been one of the few things that kept me alive through the darkest moments. It gave me a place to put what I couldn’t say out loud. It helped me survive when I didn’t feel strong enough to survive at all.

My healing journey has felt like walking through Dante’s inferno and somehow finding my way back.

A turning point in my life was attending a domestic violence support group. Walking into that room changed everything. It was there, through the compassion of others, that I learned one of the hardest truths to accept—that I deserve love. When I couldn’t see it in myself, they did. They held space for me. They supported me. They loved me until I could begin to love myself again.

### Where I Am Now

“She was not living. She was merely waiting.

Waking up only to get through the day”… surviving on hope that someday things would change.

But they didn’t change on their own.

“She was not weak. That is what it looks like to keep going when the fire has already gone out.

Even in the waiting, there was a part of her that refused to give up.

That part… is where she began again.”

There was a time I felt completely stuck—like I was paused in my own life. But I’ve learned that survival is still movement, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

“The strongest prison is the one she built inside her own mind.

Doubt, shame, guilt, and fear became walls she didn’t realize she was reinforcing.

But she learned something life-changing: nothing has power unless she gives it away.

So she stopped feeding it.

She unlocked the door.

It all ends in her mind.”

### My Purpose

This is why I am asking for help—not just to survive, but to rebuild with purpose.

Funds raised will go toward:

- Basic living expenses while I stabilize

- Reliable transportation so I can work and attend school

- Tuition and educational costs so I can begin my path helping survivors and those struggling with eating disorders

I am not asking for comfort. I am asking for a chance.

A chance to rebuild my life.

A chance to turn pain into purpose.

A chance to become someone who helps others find their way out of the darkness, just like I had to.

Even if you cannot donate, sharing this means more than I can say. Every share is a chance at rebuilding a life that was almost completely taken from me.

Thank you for reading my story, for seeing me, and for being part of my second chance at life.

Paying it forward With gratitude,

Claire Bear
