Hi out there in Give Send Go world! My name is Rita Ross and I created a brand of dolls called PocketPeople.
About 10 years ago I started the brand by hand making each and every doll using left over fabric and scraps.
My first mission was to create 100 dolls to donate to my local children’s hospital. It was a blessed day when I brought them in, along with a loving ABC wisdom book I had written with images of the handmade dolls. Please watch the video to see the book in its entirety.
I then later went on to introduce the dolls at The New York Toy Fair back in 2012. They were received with great love and even made it to FAO Schwartz!
However it didn’t take long before I realized that the toy business was much tougher than I expected. I parted ways with a business partner and I’m happy to say I’ve finally reclaimed my intellectual property, the PocketPeople, and I’m ready to move forward with a renewed mission for the dolls.
When I began, giving away dolls was a daily practice. But in retail world of course it’s all about sales. Nothing wrong with that of course, but for PocketPeople I had another vision.
My original vision was to get the dolls into hands of people truly needing empathy and comfort. Whether children or adults. Young or old. There are many “pockets” of people out there suffering everyday in their own way. Some are depressed, lonely, sad or abused. Some struggle with mental illness or troubling anxiety. People in hospitals, schools, shelters, pregnancy care centers. So many people to help.
So as I take the leap to start out again on my own, my intention is to do it right this time. I’m not looking to be in big retail, I’m looking to create the dolls in a sustainable way, and collaborate with non-profits, hospitals, shelters and more to get the dolls out there where they belong. In the hands of those that can use a little comfort. A little friend to hold.
Imagine those mobile medical vans that bring basic health care services to neighborhoods in need. How beautiful to be able to give a hurting child a small doll to hold as they receive care. Imagine a basket full of PocketPeople dolls in a homeless shelter where children may feel scared or sad. It may seem insignificant but I have personally seen sad faces light up when they are given something as simple as a sweet little doll.
I pray daily that God gives me the courage and knowledge needed to get these little helPPers out there. Doing good things and spreading the message that Jesus spread. To love one another. To help one another and give all glory to God our father.
The money I’m asking for is basically bare minimum start-up costs to set up doll sample making, book sampling, safety test the dolls and various other expenses to be fully ready to launch with grace, goodness and joy!
I thank you from the bottom of my heart and I hope you cheer me on as I start from zero once again and deliver the message so close to my heart..
Keep your eye out for PocketPeople and feel free to contact me if you know of a non profit or business doing good things. I’m happy to talk and collaborate.
Love, Rita Ross and the PocketPeople
