During the summer of 2018, we launched our first lacrosse camp based on a simple question we posed while working on the "Receiving Jesus Football Camps" we were starting up in innercity Nashville...
"Would it be all right if we also taught your boys and girls the game of lacrosse?"
After an enthusiastic "YES!", we quickly rounded up some lacrosse sticks and got things started!
Our first two camps --- one for girls and one for boys --- were held from June 4th-8th at Litton Middle School and served children from the projects of East Nashville who were part of a summer program put together by the Martha O'Bryan Community Center.
The first question we asked these children was "who has played lacrosse before?" When only a few hands went up, we asked a follow-up question..."who has HEARD OF lacrosse before?" Same few hands.
We knew we were on to something.
We went on to have an amazing week with the children. At the end of the week, many of them --- both boys and girls --- came up to us and asked "How can I keep playing? Is there a team I can join?" Sadly the answer was no.
This got us thinking...why don't we start a team for them to join?!?!?
Which brings us to why you are receiving this message...WE WANT TO GIVE THEM A TEAM!!!
Our goal is to start up...
1. An overall organization ("Level Field Lacrosse") which has a goal of "leveling the playing field" and allowing all young children regardless of background or financial capabilities to play the great game of lacrosse. This organization will be focused on the creation of lacrosse teams in innercity locations (initially innercity Nashville) as well as the continuation --- and expansion --- of the camps we started last summer.
2. The teams themselves, starting with a girls team and a boys team for development age players in East Nashville. The team name will be the "Nashville Heights Warriors". We are creating a new name for the neighborhood these kids are from called the "Nashville Heights" section of Nashville, not "East Nashville" or "Cayce Place" or anything with a currently negative connotation. We want these kids to believe that they can soar to new heights and rise above their current situations and we want that built into the team name right off the bat. We strongly believe that words have power and we want to choose the words we use to describe our team very carefully from the very start.
In order to create the teams themselves, we currently estimate that it will cost a total of approximately $20,000, most of which will be able to be spread over multiple teams over multiple years. Over half of this amount is in equipment and uniform costs, which we are very hopeful we will be able to secure from grants from US Lacrosse and other grant-making organizations as well as corporate sponsors.
In order to be in a position to apply for these grants and ask for corporate sponsorships though, we need to put some "meat on the bones" of the concept and develop an organization around it. That is what this campaign is all about.
We are raising the first $3,000 now to allow us to incorporate, achieve 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, create an internet and social media presence, do some initial promotion, begin developing partnerships and cover the other inital start-up costs of the organization as well as the two teams.
We ask that you prayerfully consider giving to our organization. Every dollar really does count at this early stage and we sincerely appreciate contributions of any amount.
Thank you in advance for any help you can give!
STICKS --- AND HEADS, HEARTS AND SPIRITS --- UP!!!
