For years, children who attended Kanakuk camps were abused by former staff member Pete Newman, a serial predator who used positions of trust and access to young campers to commit horrific crimes. Newman was eventually convicted and sentenced to multiple life terms in prison, but for many survivors, the damage did not end with his conviction.

Survivors have spent years speaking out about the lifelong effects of the abuse—trauma, anxiety, depression, broken relationships, trust issues, and the financial burden of counseling and therapy. Many have also raised concerns about whether warning signs were missed, whether enough was done to protect children, and how reports and allegations were handled over the years.

Kanakuk founder Joe White and the organization's leadership have faced ongoing criticism from some survivors, advocates, and former campers who believe greater accountability, transparency, and acknowledgment are needed. While opinions differ regarding the organization's response, survivors continue to call for their voices to be heard and for institutions to prioritize child safety above reputation.

This is not just a story about one offender. It is a reminder of what can happen when predators gain access to children and when systems fail to stop them quickly enough. Every survivor deserves to be believed, supported, and given access to the resources needed for healing.

Many survivors continue to face the emotional and financial costs of recovery years after the abuse occurred. Therapy, counseling, and trauma-informed care can be life-changing, yet these services are often expensive and difficult to access. By raising awareness, supporting survivors, and advocating for stronger child-protection measures, we can help ensure that no child endures what these victims experienced.

The focus must remain where it belongs: on the survivors, their healing, and the pursuit of accountability, transparency, and prevention.
