Friends, family, neighbors, and community,
Most of you know that we recently embarked upon our first building project since the 1980s. After years of significant prayer, study, discussion, and a unanimous vote, the congregation embarked on a $1.7 million project to improve accessibility, add resources for homeless families, and increase our worship and educational space. The construction has progressed amazingly well since we broke ground on May 8, and we hope to enjoy our “homecoming" in December. But there is still work to be done—and now we are asking for your help.
With the new structures now in place, our first church elevator will soon be installed. This lift will allow people of all physical ability levels to move easily around the building and participate fully in the life of the church, from worship upstairs to potluck suppers downstairs. Adding an elevator to this historic building will allow our facilities to agree with our hearts: that our church is a welcome space for all.
Will you help us pay for the elevator? The projected elevator cost is $55,000. All tax-deductible donated funds will go directly toward the building project, starting with the elevator. Any donations above and beyond that cost will fund other needs addressed by this building project, such as a shower for our homeless guests who come to us through the Family Promise Network and an improved entryway to welcome the community to Hopwood.
Please join us in making sure everyone can gather around the Lord’s table in our corner of Northeast Tennessee.
Hopwood Memorial Christian Church is a small but dynamic congregation located immediately adjacent to Milligan College in Johnson City, Tennessee. Hopwood was founded in the 1820s as part of the earliest wave of the Stone-Campbell restoration movement, which ultimately led to the Churches of Christ, the Independent Christian Churches, and the Disciples of Christ.
