My name is Kathy, and for the last 2.7 years, my life has been a balancing act of faith and hard work. While most people see a student, I see a future poultry scientist. When I’m not studying for my Associate’s in Science, I am on my four acres in Alamance County, tending to my heritage livestock.

I’ve spent the last five years building a small family farm while simultaneously working toward a degree that will allow me to contribute to the field of poultry research. However, I have had to do all of this without a vehicle for over 2.7 years. Managing the daily needs of a farm and a full-time course load is a massive undertaking but doing so while relying on expensive deliveries for supplies and costly rideshares for necessities has been a crushing financial burden. I’ve navigated seat shortages, program changes, and the isolation of being a solo student, all while pouring my limited resources into simply surviving without wheels.

I am currently 25 days away from Summer semester, with one of my last three classes being on-campus. However; there is a 100-mile round trip gap between my farm, my classroom, and graduating on-time for my university transfer this Fall.

My 2004 Toyota Camry—the car that I saved for and used my student aid to purchase in February 2025—was meant to be my lifeline. But in March 2025, a mechanical error at a shop led to a total transmission failure. Since that day, I have exhausted every possible avenue for help. I have called every agency and organization imaginable, only to find that there are no resources available to me. My only hope now lies in this campaign, my faith in God, and a pending request for emergency aid from my school—though that help is currently not guaranteed. I am staring at a $3,499.75 bill that I cannot pay on my own, and the clock is ticking.

I am a child of God, and I know that I am not truly alone. Yet, I am at a point where I must humble myself and ask for the support system I do not have in my life.

I have survived nearly three years of non-stop hurdles. I’ve managed a farm and a full-time course load without a safety net. I refuse to let a metal transmission stand between me and a career spent serving the agricultural community. I am so close to the finish line—I just need help getting the wheels moving.
