Description for the Request

Nick Hope, previously known by Holocaust survivor archive records and the concentration camp of Dachau, Germany, as Nikoliy Xaprenko, was born on September 7, 1924, in Ukraine.

He was a European Jew and, like millions of Jews, unfortunately ended up in the German concentration camps and became a victim of this horrific tragedy and the murder of six million Jewish people. Nick Hope escaped death many times by the grace of God, and he was liberated in 1945 by the American 42nd Rainbow Division. He was then taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries and tuberculosis that he contracted while imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp.

Nick Hope’s stories of survival were shared throughout his lifetime until his passing on March 10, 2025, at 100 years old.

On May 1, 2026, my father—or his immediate surviving family—has been invited to a special event where Nick Hope’s story is essential and necessary to be further shared with the new generation of Germans, as well as tourists and visitors from around the world who may not know the full truth. These truthful accounts must continue to be told, especially as history has at times been manipulated, fabricated, or falsified to cover up the vicious crimes committed by the Nazis against the Jewish people and humanity during that time.

My name is George Hope. I am the youngest son of Nick Hope, and I was fully inspired and empowered by my father to continue his legacy—not only to speak to people in the United States, but to go around the world and share the truth of my father’s suffering and life experience during the three years he spent in the concentration camps. He witnessed and endured unimaginable horrors, seeing and hearing firsthand the atrocities committed against his Jewish brothers and sisters, as well as the torture he himself endured.

This special trip requires financial support for travel expenses, including airfare, hotel accommodations, and transportation, as well as the upfront cost of needed materials such as brochures, flyers, and posters to help share his story.

Forum of Descendants

Dear descendants of former Dachau inmates,

In the context of the events marking the 81st anniversary of the liberation of the

Dachau concentration camp, the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site is again

organising a ‘Forum of Descendants’.

The forum is taking place on 1st May 2026 in Max Mannheimer Study Center in

Dachau.

As part of this forum, you – the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of

former Dachau concentration camp prisoners from a number of different countries –

will once again have the opportunity to get to know one another and share your

experiences in a private, safe setting.

As was the case last year, the Concentration Camp Memorial wishes to provide you

with a space to share your unique family histories and the specific experiences you

have had to endure as descendants of those persecuted by the Nazis, and to discuss

these amongst yourselves.

Encounter and socialise

The various survivor groups and descendants’ associations are invited to set up

small stands (partition walls and tables will be provided). There, you can display roll-

up banners or posters and lay out leaflets or information materials. The Bavarian

Memorials Foundation and the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site will also

be presenting their work and current projects.

Visibility – „To Be Seen“

The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site also wishes to enable individuals

and families to share their family history. At the last “Forum of Descendants”, many of

you created posters and shared stories about your ancestors there.

The posters you have donated to the memorial can be displayed again at the Max

Mannheimer House. Blank posters, pens, glue and presentation cards will also be

available on site should you wish to create new posters.
