Care 4 Connor

ABOUT CONNOR

In November 2020, Connor came home for winter break after his first semester at UNC Wilmington and never returned. He started showing symptoms of arthritis, confusion, being mentally drained, and this was only the beginning. After two years of symptoms getting worse and worse everyday, Connor is now 100% disabled. He is unable to complete the simplest of daily tasks like walking, dressing himself, opening doors, etc. Thankfully we found a strong enough pain medicine that has allowed him to be able to function around the house in the meantime while we’ve been trying every treatment we can find to cure him but nothing has worked. All of this is due to a combination of infections in his blood, originating from Lyme disease.

Over the last two years, Connor has been to a variety of doctors including pediatrics, lyme specialist, hematology, chiropractic, integrative functional medicine, traditional chinese medicine, and rheumatology just to name a few. Both rheumatologists say while he has certain autoimmune responses, his profile does not fit the mold for either rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis. Studies show that if we do this now he has a 70% chance of his condition being completely healed with normalization of his lab findings.

THE DISEASE

This fundraiser is to raise money for Connor to travel to the St. George Clinic in Germany and spend four weeks receiving treatments for chronic arthritic Lyme disease and its associated co-infections. It is also referred to as Multiple Systemic Infectious Disease Syndrome (MSIDS). These other co-infections are bacterias, viruses, molds, and other pathogens medically proven to have settled in his body affecting multiple body systems.

Examples of these lab-verified pathogens found in Connor's blood include babesia, bartonella, streptococcus, Ehrlichiosis, mycoplasma pneumonia, anaplasm, and Epstein Barr. In addition to the debilitating Lyme, these co-infections create their own set of problems. One example is he currently has strep leaking into his brain which is eating away at his brain cells causing a vast range of psychological symptoms that can cause permanent brain damage if it's not fixed soon. In addition to the fevers, severe arthritic pain, and fatigue, Connor has lost over 50 pounds in the last two years and also suffers from memory loss, psoriasis, sleep disorders, migraines, brain fog, and tremors just to name a few. It’s pivotal we heal him soon because he is on the verge of developing an autoimmune response to the co-infections in his body which has a chance to permanently disable him and change his quality of life forever. We pray Connor still has the chance to make a full recovery and is one reason we are trying to get this done as soon as possible.

THE TREATMENT

The treatment is a multi-modal approach. The Lyme bacteria would be killed using whole-body hyperthermia in conjunction with IV antibiotic therapy.  This is when you heat the body to a temperature above what Lyme can tolerate and it is killed. Any leftover Lyme is killed by administering IV antibiotics while Connor is artificially driven into a high fever. Lyme is proven to be killed at temperatures greater than 106.5 degrees so he would be sedated and heated to a temperature of 107 degrees for 3-4 hours. This would be done twice over two weeks with restorative IVs, drainers, and detoxifiers in the week between treatments. These treatments have been performed and proven effective for Lyme for over 20 years yet are not FDA approved here in the USA. Other protocols to clean the blood for associated co-infections involve photodynamic and plasmapheresis therapy which is also not provided here in the United States for Chronic Lyme Disease and its associated co-infections.

COST BREAKDOWN

Hello, We wanted to touch base and thank everyone for there continued thoughts and prayers. Connor is continuing to progress! Since being home, which will be 3 weeks on Saturday, he has gained 18.5 pounds! He told me he had 3600 calories the day before and is trying to hit the gym daily. He is taking a 6 and 12 week slew of home supplements with a 6 week follow up as well with the doctors in Germany. It will take time for things to calm down in his body as he still has half a dozen other co-infection in his body to fight, but his immune system should work on handling them as we all do with a health immune system. We will follow up with a progress report in a couple of weeks and again after the meeting with the doctors. Due to the strep, he will have to have a significant amount of dental work performed. Historically, Connor never had a cavity. Now he has fifteen! Crazy right?  That will be our focus also during this time. Thank you again for thoughts, concerns and prayers. They mean an unbelievable amount to our family and to Connor.

Connor is driving, visiting friends and getting out again!

It has been about 2.5 weeks since we have been home and in my opinion our trip was a major win! This week, Connor has been to the gym everyday, visiting friends and driving to doctor appointments by himself. While this may seem small, he has not done any of those over the last 8 months! He used to just sit in a recliner in tons of pain waiting to take his next pain pill. While he still has a long way to go, I just have to say he is a different person than when he left for Germany. He is pleasant, conversational and hopeful. He has been getting adjusted regularly and his posture is greatly improved. He does still take the maximum amount of pain medicine, but, I think in time this will hopefully improve.

I wanted to thank all of you for your past and continued support in Connor's healing journey. Doctors say he should be noticeably better his first 6 weeks back, then again over each 3 months showing improvement until around the end of the year. For now, we are just happy for any and all improvement so far. In my opinion, it is has been an amazing transformation in a short period of time.

We are home! Connor continues to improve!

Thank you all for your patients in between my posts. I wanted to give a full circle account on Connor and his healing journey. To review, in the process of killing the Lyme he received whole body hyperthermia. Then, his blood was lasered for a week and restorative IV's were given. He had a tremendous flu-like response for 4 days. They did that twice. Then, his blood was filtered over 6 hours to pull the die off out of his body. Again, he had a 4-5 day extreme flu-like response consisting of extremely high fevers, vomiting, etc). He then had what is called a "Bioidentical microbiome transplant" whereby seed of good bacteria are restored in his gut during a colonoscopy to re-flourish his good bacteria as a healthy gut has a direct effect on the immune system. This will be necessary to fight Connor's other co-infections as he moves forward.

I told him during this time that this is the body's way of pushing all of this stuff out of your body, and while it is horrible now, it is what you need to go through to get well. This proved to be true! After all that misery he woke up and asked to go outside and do some exercise! He broke out the yoga mat and the foam roller and began stretching. He did modified push ups, air squats and even some light running! I could tell that while still very sick and weak, he felt better and his athletic mental toughness was kicking into gear. Watching him reminded me of Proverbs 13:12

"Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is the tree of Life."

The nurses commented on his personality change. He was sitting up tall, he was chatty and he was smiling. He has expressed many times lately how grateful and thankful he is to have such a loving family and a caring community. He obviously is going through a personal transitional time in his life. He has slept a lot since being home. He has not driven in 6 months and stated that today he was going to try to go to the gym! His appetite is strong and he has gained 5 pounds this week since being home. Not to over hype his health. He is probably only 5-10% of where he needs to be, but now at least he feels a sense of hope and progress. He is optimistic. We have been given a 6 week home regiment program and then a follow up with the doctors. We thank you all for your continued thoughts and prayers. I will continue to keep this site up and hopefully continue to hear more progress.

Happy Easter and Resurrection Sunday,

Today we are watching Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ" to try and connect the dull thought of Jesus's suffering to the reality of the pain he must have truly endured. For otherwise, how could we justify how God understands the pain that we all go through during different times of our lives. Of course, at the time, dying on the cross did not seem like a happy ending. But it ended up being humanities greatest gift. Nowadays, we cannot even imagine the rainbow following a storm while we are in the thick of it.  Often when we are at our lowest, seemingly broken or we are in a situation that begs us to ask..."God, why me?", it may take weeks, years or sometimes even a lifetime to see how God worked out a situation for our benefit.   I believe Connor is going through this transformation now, a resurrection of sorts. We thank God for giving us the faith to lean on him and recognize this process. We lean on our friends and family and we thank you for that. Connor is still young. Life many things in life, he will not see this chapter it in its entirely now, but he will later. The Meehan's thank all of you who are reading this for your prayers, love and support as it would be a very difficult road without you. And of course, it would be nearly an impossible journey without God in our lives. Thanks JC!

PS There are signs from God being present all the time, we just have to open our senses. Funny enough, as I finish this post on Easter Sunday, church bells are ringing. As we are getting ready to go outside and attempt to get our blood moving. Connor was warming up with a foam roller on a yoga mat (only a small few would bring those items to a hospital in Germany! As I am finishing this post a Bible verse appeared on my computer that read..."“Aeneas,” Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and roll up your mat.” Immediately Aeneas got up.  In summary, put the name Connor in there and WOW! I would call that a sign!

Update #14 Things are looking up!
April 14, 2022
facebook twitter

What an amazing body we were given by God to heal from within. While Connor has been battling the storm of the die-off and detoxification of Lyme, it seems the clouds are lifting and our boy is coming back to life!  Yesterday, for the first time, he did push-ups, sit-ups and air squats and said today (before his second apheresis) he wanted to try and go for a run! Cassie and I were so excited! That has not happened in about a year so I would say that is a big day.

Today was his second apheresis. This is a process that his blood is separated and ran through a series of filters to clean and then put back into his body. Like the first hyperthermia, the first apheresis knocked him down pretty hard for 4 days like a serious flu. So today will be telling.  Historically, we now know that even if he feels sick afterwards, it is a good thing and he will better for it in a couple of days!

Monday will be prep for the endoscopy/colonoscopy/microbiome transfer on Tuesday as gut health is imperative immune health. As we come up upon Good Friday and Easter (Resurrection Sunday), we are thankful to God for all he provides, especially our sins being forgiven by the death and resurrection of Jesus.  It is through this that all healing occurs through the Holy Spirit through and by your prayers, so please keep them up! We pray that Connor receives these prayers openly and continues to heal.  While I wish Connor and I could be with our family in the short term, I know this is where we he needs to be right now and the 10 day countdown is on!  Our family, again, thanks each and everyone of you supporting our journey. We look forward to future updates with continued progress.

The doctors feel confident through experience that The Lyme has been eradicated. We are 1/2 way half way through a program addressing coinfections. These are other pathogens/diseases that ticks carry in addition to Lyme. He began to feel better until he went under a 6 -7 hour blood filtering procedure called aphaeresis. It certainly stirred things up. A bag of debris they called die off came out of his body. It definitely stirred things up. He has been flu like since with vomiting,!diarrhea a high fever and sleeping a lot. To be safe, he was Covid tested and negative.    I think his young, strong immune system is working diligently to fight and remove the die off of all the Lyme in his tissues. Doctors are monitoring him closely. Please pray this week that his nausea dissipates so he can eat well. We pray that God continues to work through and in him for continued healing. We feel confident in the protocols and procedures. He is being cared for well. Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers.

2nd Whole Body Hyperthermia Today!
April 1, 2022
facebook twitter

Today was Connor's second whole body hyperthermia treatment. As expected he seems significantly better than after his first! He is alert and the first thing he said as he came to was..."my back still hurts like from lying in a hospital bed for a week, but I no longer feel like I am being eaten alive"! Even as a chiropractor I'll say Halleluja.. I'll take that!  In theory, at this point, there is little to no Lyme left in his body.  Twice, his body temperature was elevated above the pivotal temperature 106.5 degrees that kills this mischievous bacteria. At this time anti-biotics were given through IV which, in Germany, is considered many times more effective than normal temperature in terms of  combating bodily infested Lyme spirochetes.

He will rest over the weekend. Weather has been similar to Charlotte but the temperature has dropped and they are expecting snow tomorrow. Afterwards, it the intent of the protocol to address the multitude of other bacteria and viruses which have overtaken Connor's body, also known as "co-infections". We are on to the next step. Thank you for your prayers and support. We love you all.

Update #7: High Spirits Today!
March 31, 2022
facebook twitter

Today Connor is excited and his spirits are high! He is fasting and preparing for his second hyperthermia treatment. Research has shown (within their facility) that Lyme becomes totally eradicated in the patient after the second whole body hyperthermia treatment.

Afterwards, he will recover for 48 hours and then to continue address all other co-infections.

Update #6: Rough Day Today
March 31, 2022
facebook twitter

As expected and told it has been very rough for Connor. Unfortunately he has been very ill the last 3 days. He has not eaten and when he does he cannot keep it down. Again the doctor say this is normal and should only last a couple days. Lots of restorative IVs and antibiotics are given. Please keep Connor in your prayers. He needs them as much now as ever.

Update #5: First Treatment Completed
March 31, 2022
facebook twitter

Connor received his first whole body Hyperthermia today. The doctor said he handled it beautifully and that his body is strong. They said that we should expect that he feels very poorly over the next few days but he will come out of it and that the first whole body hyperthermia was the worst because it kills the largest portion of lime and also releases a lot of toxins out of the fat and tissues accumulated throughout his life. The next couple days will be rough so please lift him up in prayer.

Update #4: Treatment Tomorrow!
March 24, 2022
facebook twitter

Connor has been prepared for his big treatment tomorrow they’ve been giving him IVs no food for 48 hours no food 24 hours before or 24 hours afterwards. He also received other treatments today to build his body up And prepare him for the big day. He will sleep most of the day tomorrow. Please be praying!

Update #3: Prepping for Treatment

Wow, we are blown away that we have already reached our goal for Connor\'s treatment — the Lord is so faithful! Thank you for giving so generously and praying so diligently. This page will continue to stay open for updates on Connor\'s treatment every couple days.

Connor and Michael just touched down in Munich and arrived at the hospital. They really like it there: the beds are comfortable, food is good, and Connor got his Xbox to work. They met with one of the doctors and went over the treatment schedule and details. Connor will have his first hyperthermia treatment on March 25th, and he starts several therapies immediately.

Thank you for your support! 💜🇩🇪💛
