Supporting the Paul Schwab Family

Campaign Created by: Brenda Fandel

The funds from this campaign will be received by Karen Schwab.

Goal : USD $50,000

Hello, my name is Brenda the slightly older sister to my loving and supportive brother Paul.  Even though Paul is the youngest of six he has long been the family voice of support and acts of love for all of us and everyone he encounters.

I am reaching out asking for your help at this time as my little brother, his loving wife Karen and their two children Eli and Mya desperately need your financial assistance and healing prayers.  Simply put cancer has been an enemy upon my family for years and now has been causing chaos in my brother's life!

The long and much more complex story is that Paul was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor, oligodendroglioma, in 2009.  He had an 8 hour awake craniotomy to remove as much as they could in August of 2009.  He was doing great until he had a grand mal seizure shortly before Christmas in 2019.  He proceeded to have 2 more brain surgeries, one in December of 2020 that took 17 hours and one in March that took 8 hours of 2021 up in San Francisco. After the surgeries he had 33 rounds of proton radiation treatment.  Following the last surgery Paul had lost some strength on his left side and walked with a limp.  He did physical therapy to help regain his strength.  He went back to work part time in December 2021 after being off for a year.  In April 2022 he began to experience increased numbness in his left arm/hand and left leg/foot.  The symptoms gradually became worse so he could no longer work, he's unable to use his left arm/hand and walks with a cane.  The MRI scan showed the reason for his symptoms was swelling in his brain.  He has been on steroids and last week had his first infusion of Avastin to help take down the swelling.  He will have another infusion every 3 weeks.  In 2 months he will have another scan and the doctors will determine what treatment will be needed at that time.  He is currently have physical therapy 2 times per week.

Due to Paul not being able to work and disability benefits being minimal and the medical expenses growing with all the treatment he is receiving right now they are having a hard time making ends meet.  We humbly ask for your help during this trying time for Paul and his family.  Thank you so much for your support and prayers!

7/21/22 update in Paul’s status

First, we just want to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped us along this journey. From the prayers, donations and meals etc it has all been so appreciated❤️  Wanting to give you an update on how things are going here on the home front. Paul continues to face everyday with courage and a knowing that God is in control and his story is far from over. Based on Paul’s most recent MRI  and how he is feeling his team of Dr’s say there is a possibility of either aggressive tumor growth or damage from radiation treatment. Either way surgery and more treatment is not an option at this time. Due to extreme weakness on his left side Paul is needing constant care with walking by mainly using a wheelchair and cane and help with everything else as he is not able to perform any daily tasks on his own. He is going to get another scan early September so we can hopefully have a better idea of what exactly is happening. We need wisdom to know how to move forward on major decisions regarding our home, and finances as Paul is getting very little from disability and Karen has to cut back on her orders significantly. We are so thankful to have his mom Doris here to help but unfortunately she has to go back to Minnesota August 3rd so things will be increasingly more difficult for Karen who needs to juggle, running the home, kids in school, business and Paul. Because of this situation they are home bound which has made for a very boring summer for the kids.  Thank you for your continued prayers and support during this extremely difficult time. We continue to claim 1 Peter 2:24 over Paul’s life!
