This year has been a year of challenges for many of us. Mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial exhaustion have set for many due to COVID-19. There is a particular group that likely feels the effects of this more acutely, and that is of our foster children. It is estimated that the needs for foster placement will rise because of this pandemic.

Hi, my name is Kalli Jones. I am a lifelong resident of Port Angeles, WA, aside from time away for college and to work as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in Tennessee. Having worked in the pediatric medical field and having four of my own children, I understand the importance of child literacy and the enormous benefits that reading a book with a parent can bring. I have a heart for children in our community that might not have had that, and I know a lot of you out there do, too. As an Educational Services Representative and Literacy Advocate with Usborne Books and More, I can help get books into more kids’ hands.

Who: Foster Children of Clallam County (Forks and Port Angeles, WA); there are currently 114 children in foster care ages 0-17.

What: Books!! Children’s board books, picture books, chapter books, activity books, graphic novels, encyclopedias, non-fiction, etc.

When: November 17, 2020 – December 3, 2020

Where: The Angel Tree event will be held online will directly benefit foster children of Clallam County. The books will be shipped (free of charge), organized/bundled by age, and then will be delivered to the Department of Children, Youth, and Families for distribution.

Why: Countless studies show the importance of reading and child literacy and how illiteracy affects all walks of life. According to a study in School Psychology Review, “Children in foster care lag significantly behind their peers in reading, writing, numeracy, and language, and perform significantly worse on measures of academic and socioemotional adjustment compared to children from low socioeconomic backgrounds” Pears, Katherine C et al. “Prereading Deficits in Children in Foster Care.” School psychology review vol. 40,1 (2011): 140-148.

How: Every dollar that you donate will be matched 50% in additional free books! It is my goal to raise at least $10 per child for books. All the money that is raised over the goal will go toward additional books for the foster children who are or will be in care.

During this season of Thanksgiving, please consider donating a book to a child in our community. We want our most vulnerable members of the community to know that we see them, we care about them, we are thankful for them, and we are thankful for their foster families caring for them.

You can see the books that the children will be receiving at If you would like to pick out a specific book, you can leave a comment in the thread with your donation, otherwise I will be selecting age appropriate titles. I will be posting pictures of all of the books at delivery time. Thank you!
