Buying Time for Healing: Bob Anderson’s Recovery

Bob Anderson is a 94-year-old Korean War era U.S. Air Force veteran who was living independently and driving as recently as this summer. On July 4, a fall set off a medical emergency that required brain surgery and abruptly changed his ability to live on his own.

Bob is recovering and showing real signs of improvement, but the path forward depends on consistent care and time. This fundraiser was created to help bridge this period of recovery.

Who Bob Is

Before this medical crisis, Bob lived an active and engaged life. He began his career working with early computer systems at IBM, later served as an in-house computer consultant for Encyclopedia Britannica, and eventually founded his own software consulting company in 1970. For decades, he helped design and maintain business systems during the early years of commercial computing.

Bob was married to his wife, Juanita, for many decades until her passing in 2017. Together they raised one daughter, Candida. Those who know Bob describe him as thoughtful, curious, and kind, with a strong interest in learning and conversation.

During the 1970s, Bob also served on the board of his church, and his family was actively involved in supporting and hosting visiting missionaries. Faith and service were a steady part of family life, alongside work and community involvement.

This situation did not result from neglect or long-term decline. It was the result of an unexpected medical event.

What Happened

After his fall on July 4, Bob’s condition declined over the following weeks. In September, he underwent emergency brain surgery to relieve dangerous pressure.

While the surgery was successful, recovery has been complicated. In the months that followed, Bob experienced COVID and pneumonia. Around Thanksgiving, his insurance provider denied a second appeal to continue skilled nursing coverage and recommended that he transition to paid assisted living.

Due to the timing of this decision, Bob had to be relocated quickly to an assisted living facility that could provide the level of supervision he now requires.

Despite these challenges, Bob continues to show improvement. Recent brain scans indicate continued healing. Physical therapy is scheduled to resume in January, and his care team remains cautiously optimistic.

The Caregiver Reality

Bob’s daughter, Candida, is his only child and primary caregiver. She is also a senior citizen. She manages his medical coordination, finances, appointments, transportation, and day-to-day logistics while continuing to manage her own health.

In addition to caregiving, Candida continues her responsibilities with Align Ministries in Naperville, Illinois, where she serves as Elementary Sunday School Director.

Like many families facing a sudden medical crisis, she is covering immediate care costs while navigating Veterans Administration benefits and longer-term care planning. These processes take time, and expenses continue while applications are reviewed.

This level of care is difficult for one person to sustain without support.

Why We Are Asking for Help

Bob’s assisted living and care costs are approximately $7,000 per month. This includes housing, meals, supervision, and basic support services. Additional medical and transition-related expenses continue to arise.

We are seeking $25,000 to help cover approximately 90 days of care while:

Bob’s recovery continues
Physical therapy resumes
Veterans Administration benefits and longer-term care options are finalized
This fundraiser is intended as short-term support to stabilize care during recovery.
