I am asking for help because I managed to get scammed out of $40,000 and am afraid of losing my house.
This is what happened:
I met a guy, Alex, on Instagram. He called me “pretty” and we started messaging each other. When my boyfriend broke up with me, Alex was there or me. We talked every day and I looked forward to our conversations. I fell in love with him and he said he was in love with me as well. This was back in February 2020.
Alex claimed to be in the military and was in Saudi Arabia on a peace-keeping mission for 6 months. After about a month I asked him to get leave. He indicated that I had to request the leave and pay for his airfare home. Not knowing anything about military procedures, I sent the request and the money. The day he was supposed to come home the COVID-19 pandemic hit and all air traffic was grounded.
He told me that he was sending me a package with some gold jewelry and that I would have to pay a small fee when it arrived in the Philippines. He told customs that it was “personal effects “. Customs sent me an email saying that if I sent enough money to cover the customs fees and the fine for lying on the form, they would ship the package. I didn’t have enough money so I ignored the email.
The pandemic continued and a month passed. I again asked if he could take leave. He indicated that they would not let him go but there was a lawyer who could help. So I sent money for that. After a couple of days, he sent an email claiming that he was going to be arrested and faced 7 years in prison because of the package that was held up in customs. So I took out a second mortgage and sent the lawyer $30,000. A couple of days later, instead of getting the good news that Alex would be coming home, the lawyer called and said that the “Comptroller General “ did not accept his offer and that “money laundering “ was a serious offense. He wanted me to send $64,000 more! This was when I began to realize that something was not right.
Alex was everything I ever wanted in a guy. He was caring, protective and sweet. He said that he would pay everything off when he got home. We were going to get married and had a wonderful future planned. He wanted to keep everything a secret so we could surprise everyone when he got home. I was so happy, but it was all a lie!
I am broken hearted and in debt. I just got furloughed from my job, am struggling to make ends meet, and am afraid of losing my house. I have gone to the police, FBI, and Attorney General. No one can do anything to help.
If anyone can help donate, I would really appreciate it!
