As soon as I walked through the doors of the Isaiah 55 mission last July, I realized I was home. I turned to my mom and said, "I should have been an intern this summer."
She had the grace to not say, "I told you so," but the phrase was evident in her smile.
I first went to Reynosa in July 2018 and immediately fell in love with the mission and the neighborhood of Aquiles Serdán. I knew I wanted to someday serve in a larger capacity at a mission that was doing such good in the city of Reynosa. I was asked to be an intern for the summer of 2019, but with the uncertainty of being a senior at my university and the pressure to have an internship in my field of study or to participate in a study abroad program, I declined the offer, a decision I spent weeks and months kicking myself over.
Now I have the opportunity to serve in Mexico for eight hot and exhausting weeks. I will assist church groups that come down to do construction projects in the neighborhood, like cleaning the ball fields near the mission, painting the school for the deaf and filling potholes in the nearby streets. At the end of the summer, my group from Zion Church in Lincoln and the Isaiah 55 staff will host a VBS for kids in the neighborhood.
As you can imagine, I am in need of help, spiritually and financially. As a homebody, I'm going to be challenged to be away from my family and life in Lincoln for a whole summer. Please pray that I have my heart in the right place to serve. If you are able, please consider donating so I can go and serve at a mission that means so much to me.
