My dad was diagnosed on May 11, 2025 with Glioblastoma (brain cancer) at HCA hospital.

My dad lived in a very small town in Colmesneil, TX. He preferred to retire in the country and live a quiet life. During a phone call he was having slurred speech, sounded disoriented, and showed signs of hallucinations. My first thought was a stroke. I drove to the country to pick him up and saw that his house was out of sorts. It seemed like he was stuck in a dream state. I immediately took him to the hospital.

After an MRI, the doctor told me and my family that my father had a brain aneurysm and a brain tumor. The brain tumor was located in the front left side of his brain. The neurologist treated the brain aneurysm first and then removed the tumor. I knew there was a possibility that the brain surgery could have complications and alter his personality. I didn’t care as long as I could still see my dad. He made it through the surgery, but the doctor came back with results that shocked everyone. The doctor said he had a very aggressive type of brain cancer called Glioblastoma. The doctor proceeded to tell us how there is no cure and my dad was going to die. He said there are ways to slow it down, but ultimately this cancer always aggressively grows back and destroys the brain in the process. I was in shock! I didn’t know what to do or what to think or how to respond. My dad? My dad? My dad fought in Vietnam. He was not just an army soldier. He was one of the best in the green beret special forces that operated in secret. He is a highly decorated soldier. He could have been killed by jumping out of an airplane or by staying days in a jungle by himself or blown up in Vietnam. Now, he’s dying of cancer. I just can’t accept that this is how his life ends. He means everything to my family. None of us can imagine life without him. I already lost my mom to cancer and have seen what cancer does to a person. My mom had died from cancer in June 2014 (battled for 10 years). Now my dad will die of cancer. Cancer sucks!

In a month, I have watched my Dad decline so fast. He can no longer speak, he can’t eat, and he can’t walk. The medical team said that they have never seen it this aggressive. They had a plan for radiation and chemo, but we never made it that far. The medical team decided that the best plan for him at this stage is to plan for end of life. His updated scan showed two more tumors growing rapidly and destroying his simple cognitive functions, such as speaking, swallowing, and responsiveness.

My dad had been our rock, always strong and full of life. But now, the roles have reversed—we are here to support him through these trying times. His diagnosis was sudden and left us with little time to prepare emotionally and financially.

We need to keep him as comfortable as possible and ensure he spends his final days in comfort and dignity at home and surrounded by those who love him most. We have setup home care/hospice care at my sister’s house in Deer Park. Every day is precious now; every moment counts as we cherish our time together.
