What is the Tarot Apocalyptica?
After being asked for the third time about doing a tarot deck of my own, I’m beginning to shoot the Major Arcana of that self-same deck, card by card over the next however many years it takes. The first card, the Fool funded at an astonishing 204% of my goal, which means that going in to the second card, the Magician, I’m starting way ahead of where I was with the Fool.
Inspired by All of the Things in my head and especially George Miller’s Mad Max franchise, I am continuing my commitment to a series of work unlike anything I’ve ever done before in terms of scope and time invested. Considering that I’m also in recovery and living with clinical depression and chronic anxiety, it should be one ride historic.
I have been shooting photography since I was fourteen-years-old and professionally shooting since 1996. I’ve won awards. I’ve traveled the world. Along the way, people like you have helped me. Sent me to Europe and Japan. Sent my work and my physical self to Italy. Sent me to a white horse herd in the Tucson desert. Made it possible to start this deck with a bang.
I am continuing to line up locations all over California with the help of a small army of war girls and war boys. I have a vision of doing two eventual exhibitions, the first at the completion of the Major Arcana, and the second, at the completion of the Minor, where the entire deck will be displayed. It will be massive. Seventy-eight 20x30 giant images, with at least one additional wild card, along with all of the props and costumes that I will be creating that don’t go home with the models who will wear them. On top of that, the completed images will become a working tarot deck and an art book. Now there’s only 77 images left to go. No big. Again, that would be sarcasm.
I wasn’t kidding when I said this was going to be the work of years. At a minimum, I’m looking at seventy-nine possible months of work, now seventy-eight. Call it six years.
But I’m staying small. One card at a time. Now’s the Magician’s turn...Hero - Tarot Apocalyptica concept art
Why Give Me Money?
The second card is harder than the first. My model is still my eldest daughter, Jane, so that’s taken care of. But I very much want to rent a war rig or big rig for this card, and there are six more significant props that need to be acquired and/or created to make the Magician work. I’m asking for your help to afford the materials to create the costume and props that Jane will wear and use as she climbs aboard the rig of mastery that the Magician dominates. Now some of the materials have already been acquired from the overflow from the Fool (THANK YOU!), but there’s still a long way to go.
In return, you can buy the only artist proofs in three sizes that will ever be in existence of this card that are not the final 20x30 (I’m seriously leaning towards 30x40) gallery edition. There will only be as many proofs as the people who buy them. The largest proof will only be in the 11x17 inch range (that’s the size of the archival paper I’ll be using). This will be the only affordable way to get one of these. I’m also going to document as much of the process as possible, and I will continue the perk of Anji’s Camera as its single perk, where I will give a disposable film camera to my support crew to document behind-the-scenes of the process and the shoot. The supporter who chooses this perk will receive it undeveloped. It will be their choice to keep it for themselves as our creative secret or share with the world. There is also the the Fool’s challenge coin, a license to drive the fury road and prove your allegiance to the war party.
The budget also includes the fees for IndieGoGo, PayPal, and the cost of materials for the exclusive artist proofs.

Why isn’t the book and deck part of the perks?
I have no idea what will be the best way to publish any of those things until the deck itself is finished. I also cannot set a price or time for when they would come out this early in the process and that would not be fair to any of you.
How much will you document?
As much as I can. However, because there are other people and models involved, I will at times keep them out of frame if they request that their privacy be respected.
Will the proofs be signed?
Yes, and numbered, so you know how many of your fellow supporters make up that unique set of proofs.Captain of a Ship of Stone - Tarot Apocalyptica concept art
