Judah is a bubbly 4.5 year old with Down Syndrome. He is the funniest and happiest kiddo you could ever meet! Judah also has numerous other health and social needs that require constant supervision and trained caregivers. Judah is going to be working with Gilfords Golden Guardians and will be having a service dog trained specifically for all of his needs. The dog will be trained to alert a caregiver when Judah's body temperature is too high, when his blood sugars are too low and will also help Judah to remain within close proximity of his caregiver. Service Dogs are amazing for their medical benefits but can also help increase confidence and independence and the hope is for Judah to be able to walk through a grocery store without him running away. Gilford's Golden Guardians specializes in training service dogs for young children with special needs and we are very excited to have an opportunity to work with them! Judah's golden retriever will be born in the month of January (exact timing TBA as we are waiting on information from the breeders) and the training will start when his puppy is 8 weeks old (March). Judah will be training with his dog 1.5 hours daily five days a week and will be feeding, grooming and walking his dog as well as going to stores, church and therapy. Judah will also travel to Gilford twice a month while training and within 10-12 months the dog will graduate as a licensed service dog.
The cost of the dog will be $1,600-2,000 depending on the breeder and the one year training program is $8,000. For a total of approximately $10,000. We are able to make payments with the training program but have to pay for at least half up front ($4,000) and then will continue to make payments during the training. We will also need $200-300 to be able to neuter and vaccinate the dog.
The price is high-but the benefits that Judah will receive from this opportunity are priceless. Please pray about supporting him in this endeavor!
