Hi, I'm David Mathis. My wife, Janet, and I live in Iquitos, Peru where God has called us to help other evangelical missionaries and evangelize, disciple, and train pastors and other disciple makers. We are not supported missionaries; we live on our social security, which is enough to do everything except for projects.
By God's grace we have a wonderful place with a nice house where we invite all of the local missionaries for a barbecue on Sunday afternoons. This may seem trivial, but it is essential for the well-being of the missionaries here. It a a safe place with time to de-compress and de-stress. I saw a study a few years back that showed the average missionary as being at 800 on the stress level test, and anything above 200 is considered unhealthy.
Our large yard is walled in, giving a safe place for even young children, and there is a volleyball court, a soccer field, a wading pool, a large swing, and a tether ball, along with other toys for the enjoyment of all. We would like to add a play structure and a built in pool eventually.
We also host a Bible study for the missionary ladies on Tuesday afternoons, which gives them another chance to socialize and have a time away from their children, a must for young moms.
We let all of the missionaries know that we and our place are available whenever needed. As I am a mechanic and carpenter, besides being a pastor, I can help with other details in their lives. So far we have built three security gates, built shelves, repaired wiring, repaired vehicles, installed window grates, done flood abatement projects, and cheauffered many missionaries and their friends and relatives.
We enjoy being able to help so many, and we have been able by some of our own money and donations to get a good start on a shop, but we need to buy a few more tools and get the shop wired for three-phase electricity. This will help us as well as many other missionaries here.
We also invite all of the neighborhood kids to come and play on Thursdays. We have had as many as thirty-eight. We show a Spanish video on a Bible story, followed by questions and a presentation of the Gospel. They have a great time and we are praying for real relationships with Jesus which will transform their lives.
On Saturdays we have about a dozen university students in for English class. They are excited to learn, and of course we love to share the love of Jesus with them. Some are already believers, but most have a knowlege of God but no relationship.
I would appreciate your prayers and, if God moves you, your monetary support.
Thank you and may God richly bless you as you continue to grow in Him and treasure Him.
According to His purpose,
David and Janet Mathis
