Asking for help is not something my family is accustomed to. We were taught to take care of ourselves, to work hard, pay our taxes and bills, live within our means, and save whenever possible. Recently, my brother, Fredric Sponholz, was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer. The diagnosis itself was shocking and heartbreaking, but the reality of outrageous medical costs associated with emergency surgery, diagnosis, and potential treatment was an additionally cruel blow. I'm not sure how it came to be the case that financial trauma is a natural outcome of a cancer diagnosis, but it is, and it is not something a family can manage on their own.
Our family has been gifted with wonderful support already from friends, and it is truly appreciated. I'm posting this campaign with the intent of easing some of the financial burden that has already, and will continue to accumulate for Fred and Cindy. If you are moved to donate, offer prayers, or simply share this campaign, please know that the family will be grateful. Sincerest thanks.
Update #3 June 8, 2022
Hello everyone, our heartfelt thanks to all. I received my "estimated" cost for treatment. They scheduled me to get a "port" July 6th and receive the first cycle of chemo. The cost is unbelievable. If you've never been through it you just wouldn't imagine. A "port" is $15,000.00, that's just to put a tube in my chest to administer chemo drugs. A "cycle", (1) treatment and lab work is $6609.98. I'm scheduled for 18 treatments/cycles once every 2 weeks beginning July 7th. Needless to say, I'm in a state of SHOCK. At the moment all I can do is ask that you pray for favor. I'm not going to give up and I BELIEVE I will be a testimony of Gods Power and Grace through this. Thank you for your donations, Thank you for your prayers. Thank you for sharing this campaign with your Church, friends and families. Fred
Update #2 May 16, 2022
Hello everyone, and THANK YOU to all of you who have Donated, Prayed and passed this campaign on to others. I mean THANK YOU! On Thursday I had my "second opinion" tests run. The results came back and I had my follow up at MD Anderson with Dr. Smaglo on Friday as scheduled. Unfortunately, due to the location of the mass surgery is not possible. Aside from attacking my intestines there seems to be no evidence that it has moved to any other major organs. Not to say there are not microscopic cells floating around but there isn't anything that shows up on the tests except for 2 small nodules in lining of my abdomen below my lungs. I still need to get some clarification on the test results as some seem contradictory to what is written and what we were told at the consultation. I will post when I get clairification. The tumor board recommends 8 weeks of chemo. Following the treatment they will do another scan to see how well it is working. This will start in the next 2 to 3 weeks. It will be an INTENSE cocktail of 3 drugs. 1 drug for 2 hours, 1 for 90 minutes, and 1 for a continuous 46 hours. A port will be required as 1 of the drugs will destroy a smaller vein. They're starting with the most powerful and aggressive treatment coz I'm "young and healthy" yes, they said that. Radiation may also be used depending on the response to chemo. I'm MUCH better emotionally (Cindy too) Now to put more weight on before I start losing.....Thank you again for your support. Thank you for your Prayers and Thank you for sharing. God Bless!
Update #1 May 9, 2022
Hello everyone. Thank you to my sister for setting this up. Thank you Lisa Burns, Janet Dooling and Randy Blanchard for helping start this campaign off and sparking a light of hope. Thank you to my friends, family and to all the kind people in this world with giving hearts. I really don't have an exact idea of what I am about to go through other than knowing it is going to be extremely expensive. It started April 2nd. I wasn't feeling well and asked Cindy to take me to our local Sacred Heart ER. They did a CT scan and immediately sent me to Memorial Herman Hospital. After blood tests, X-rays and 2 MRI's I was scheduled for surgery within hours. My surgeon, Dr. Kevin Wheeler, informed me I had Pancreatic cancer that had metastisised into my stomach, spleen and upper and lower intestines. He removed all the mess he could, without causing severe trauma to my body and performed a colostomy for my totally blocked colon and informed me I had 1 to 2 months to live. I spent 8 days in the hospital for surgery and recovering to the point I could leave and the next to weeks recovering at home. A much more pleasant place. On a good note, with the colostomy I'm getting nutrition into my body and have regained 7 of the 70 pounds I have lost in this ordeal.
Enter MD Anderson Hospital and staff. I had an initial consultation April 28th. My Doctor, Dr. Smaglo MD., a Pancreatic specialist, gave me an "idea" of what I was in for. I will not know for certain what his plan of action is going to be until I have another "Specialized" MRI on 5/12 to determine if the cancer has spread to anywhere else in my body. I will have a followup consultation with him Friday the 13th. From what I gathered at the first consultation, more than likely it looks like it will be a series of expensive Chemo Therapy treatments.
If you have the means and time to make a donation, we thank you from the bottom our hearts. If you're not in that position, PLEASE PRAY! I have personally seen it heal friends and completely baffle Doctors and experts. At the least, we ask you pass this on to any of your friends, family or our brothers and sisters in Christ, anyone with a giving heart that feels moved by our Lord to help. I thank you. UPDATES: As soon as I know, I will post and you'll know. God Bless
