Many of you may be aware that right after Christmas last year, Elaine was diagnosed with breast cancer. Here’s our update! And if you have carried Elaine in your prayers, please know that our God has heard and honored them!
Two lumpectomies, two lymph nodes removed, and 15 rounds of radiation all crammed into February-July leave us in a recovery stage. The good news: no chemo was required. The severe after-effects of radiation have healed. And Elaine’s blood labs show that a wonderful re-set has occurred in her body chemistry. It will be a long journey ahead to continue living and cultivating a lifestyle that cancer HATES!
In future posts,we’ll fill you in on more details of what that journey has entailed over the past year. Here’s just a little bit to start with:
Our Christian nutritionist and health coach, Janie Garber, came on board right after diagnosis. She immediately recommended we get additional support, counsel and health advice from one of the doctors she studied with during her certification—Dr. Nalini Chilkov of Santa Monica. Elaine has counselled with Dr. Chilkov several times over the many months of this cancer journey (and also with Dr. Chilkov’s clinic nutritionist, Kirstin Nussgruber) with the goal of “creating a body where cancer cannot thrive”. You can see more of her work at nalinichilkov.com.
All of this additional support has been entirely out of pocket. Our health insurance covers surgeries, routine labs, and classic Western treatments, but the clinic doctors have no wisdom or guidance concerning the root causes of this cancer and what to do about them. Diet hasn’t even entered the conversation with our Kaiser doctors this year. So every penny spent with Dr. Chilkov, her nutritionist, and the eating/supplement plan she has given us, not to mention the targeted labs she has ordered and evaluated for Elaine, has been instrumental in the vastly improved health Elaine has experienced as Christmas approaches once again.
The supplements and special foods Elaine utilize now to continue on this healing path cost anywhere from $250-300 a month. Each consult with Dr. Chilkov is $295, and with her nutritionist it’s $150. The “cancer terrain” tests that Dr. Chilkov requests, now once a quarter to monitor Elaine’s body chemistry for the next phase toward complete healing, are at minimum $350, with Dr. Chilkov’s discounts. All of this is above what we pay for our group health insurance. So far this year, our out-of-pocket costs have been about $4500.
If you would like to help us with these additional expenses, we would be humbled and grateful. Not just knowing that our finances won’t be overwhelmed, but also to know that we don’t travel this journey alone. And along the way, we will continue to share the discoveries we’ve made on the path to strength and health. Thank you!
