David's battle began just two months ago when Ayse noticed a lump on his neck that was growing. After visiting the doctor and running a series of tests, they heard the words no one ever wants to hear. A fast-moving cancer has impacted his throat and the near by lymph node. Action needed to be taken right away. All this happened just days before David's 50th birthday and their 15th Thanksgiving wedding anniversary.

As with all cancers, there are many tests and scans that need to be performed before treatment can start however, David was already feeling the affects and showing signs of advancing disease. The location of the cancer has left him weak and unable to eat, necessitating immediate medical intervention. They have needed to relocate to Atlanta Georgia to Emory's Cancer Center for his treatments. Ayse has been camping out in his room at the hospital since David's admission in early December.
