My name is Christina Conley and I am a junior transfer student at Springfield College. I am currently involved in many activities such as Women’s Soccer, Student Athletic Leadership Team, YMCA Club, Habitat for Humanity, Friends of Rachel Club, Vagina Monologues, LTC (Leadership Training Conference participant), CAB (Campus Activity Board member) etc. Because I am new to Springfield College, I want to be a sponge and soak up as many amazing opportunities that this school has to offer. For me, that means getting involved in as many clubs and organizations possible so that I may meet new people and broaden my horizons in regards to my mental capacity to work with others and to experience a variety of new things.
The Alternative Break Program to Haiti is the best and most ideal way for me to satisfy my craving for service and rewarding experiences during this week of designated free time that we have built into the school year. Every time I travel abroad, I always find myself dancing with volunteer opportunities. Because of these experiences, I have fallen more in love with the world around me. This love grows more fervently when I am doing service. I was brought into existence to make people smile and to create a safe and loving environment in which others can peacefully reside, whether it is in the continental United States or abroad.
There are two types of changes that I hope will result from my involvement in my service in Haiti. The first is a physical change in the environment in which I worked, such as improvements upon the children's school, building infrastructures, gardening, etc. if I visually recognize progress being made physically on my part, I will gather that the labor I have undergone in order to make someone else’s environment safer has made a colossal difference in someone else’s life, as well as my own. The second type of change is an emotional change that comes with the act of service itself. Every day I that will hold a child, play with a toddler, or speak with a teenager when I am engaging in this service, I will be happier and wiser than the day before. During this Alternative Break Program, I hope to not only enlighten myself, but others as well because of my commitment and passion to serve.
I have a burning desire to touch the hearts and souls of people far and wide with open arms and a gigantic smile. To me, that means leaving my footprint in as many countries as I can in order to serve the world and its people. I want to leave an everlasting mark on the world because then I will know in my heart that I have given back to the planet that gave me everything. With your generous donations, I can make this dream a reality by serving in Haiti.
