Help Build a Local Grocery Store in an Under-served Community

Having direct access to quality meats, fruits, and vegetables at your local grocery store is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. However, the ease of hopping into a car, driving a short distance, and shopping in the comfort of an air-conditioned building for the staples your family needs is a convenience many people across the United States do not have.

In fact, in Maryland alone, over 9% of all households do not own a vehicle of any kind making the need for grocery stores to be located within walking distance of people’s homes a vital part of the community.

Without local stores, mothers, fathers, grandparents, and more are forced to either walk extremely long distances, take long bus rides, or pay for cab fare to and from grocery locations. This often takes funds away from food purchases especially since it is the less fortunate communities who are often the ones forced to travel long distances for fresh food.

This leaves underserved communities struggling to provide healthy foods to their families, but we intend to change that, and YOU can help!

The city of Annapolis, Maryland has seen several overall economic developments throughout the city, however, one predominantly African American community located just south of Northwest Street End Park has continually been left behind with no local access to a community grocery store.

In fact, anyone living within the community is forced to travel over 10 miles in any direction to locate a grocery store that provides fresh produce, fruits, meat, and essential household items. Considering the majority of the neighborhood does not own a vehicle and cannot afford the cost of travel, this leaves a large portion of the community relying on local convenience stores for fast food.

Fast food does not lead to a healthy lifestyle and can severely impact the health and wellness of the community as a whole. Therefore, our goal is to open a boutique grocery store within the heart of the neighborhood allowing everyone much-needed access to affordable healthy foods and essentials!

With your support, we will provide quality meats, produce, and essential household items at an affordable rate that will greatly impact the health and pride of the members of the direct community.

This is an essential service within the community as over 11% of the population in Annapolis lives below the poverty line and we must all do our part to ensure everyone has access to healthy foods to build a better future for our nation.

One of the marvelous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a way we couldn’t as individuals. When we pool our strength and share the work and responsibility, we can welcome many people, even those in deep distress, and perhaps help them find self-confidence and inner healing.” – Jean Vanier
